Hi,

I am getting unhappy with the Epson 820.

This morning I printed 2 images. The first was after I did the nozzle check and it came out great. A few minutes later I printed another image and got some banding.

I re-ran the nozzle check and printed a 3rd image and it too was great. I LOVE this printer. I detest the issues between banding and clogging.

I have a requirement, well two I guess. The first is I don't need the wide carriage and do not desire to pay that much for a printer. The other is I have 23" long paper (Epson) for panoramas and need a printer that can handle the paper length.

I currently have an HP 952c and a Epson 820. The HP drops round drops of ink on the print (not all the time) and has problems handling thicker paper. It will not work with the panorama paper.

The Epson produces fantastic prints when it is not clogged or banding.

I prefer a 6 ink system and don't care if it is one cartridge for the colors or 5 individual color cartridges.

Price range should be ~$250 or less. I am not professional. I am thinking of taking the NYIP course and I may need to use the printer for my assignments.

Thanks, :)

A coworker has the newer Epson C80 printer, it uses5 or 6 ink cartridges and produces very nice prints. In the few months we have had it, I haven't noticed any clogging or banding problems with it, and he uses it very frequently as it is one of our proofing printers at work. I have an 880 that gets used ad a moderate frequency, and haven't had any clogging problems with it either.

On the other hand, we have an 870 (or 875) that seems to always be clogged.

Another printer you might want to check out is the new Canon 9000. I have heard from a few people that they are very happy with that printer. I can't speak personally about it as I have never used one, but my first color printer was a Canon, in fact it was one of the first good quality color printers for the consumer market, and at the time it was very good. (I have since realized that my cat can draw better than it printed...but heck, it was 10+ years ago!)

First color printer was a Canon 610e. Good color printer. Just not a photo printer.

The s9000 is a wide carriage, $500 printer. Bigger and more expensive than I desire.

I was thinking of the $250 s820 or the newer version of that.

My HP952C needs to find a new home as it just drops bits of ink at will.

Thanks, :)

Didn't know the Canon was so large...not that that is a bad thing, just that I realize it removes it from your list. And yes, the 600e was what I had. I think I even still have some prints from it around here somewhere. I printed a picture of my cat with it that I thought looked so good that I got it laminated (yeah, I was easily impressed back then ;) ...I know I still have that print in a box somewhere.

You weren't the only one. For their time, the Canon 600 series were great printers.

On a positive note, CostCo has the Epson 820 ink sets (1 black, 2 color) for ~$53.

CostCo also does a good job with their Fuji Frontier. At ~$2 per 8 x 10 it really is a good value.

I want one of the Kodak 8500 dye sub printers that we just got at the studio. It only does up to 8x10, but we just a small emergency on a job that was shot on film where one image needed touching up (had a light stand shadow in it, bad assistant!), so there are 4 - 8x10s from the darkroom and 1 - 8x10 out of the dye sub after fixing, and it looks EXACTLY like the prints out of the darkroom.

In the past when we have had to do this, we would have had to print them all digitally because you could see such a difference between the inkjet prints and a traditional print, and we didn't want the clients asking what was going on. This was the first time we have delivered tradition prints with a digital print and NOT been worried about the client seeing a difference or complaining or anything like that. My boss is happy.

Just an echo of many previous posts. I've had lots of problems with clogging of the Epson C80. Main advice: don't let it sit around idle. It's when I haven't used it for a while (like over summer) that it is impossible to resurrect.

As far as recommendations for alternatives...I too bought a Canon 9000. Six colors are separately replaceable...and I have found good workable "generic" inks online that have worked just fine. No clogging problems.
